It was the 1976 European Championship final, and tension was high. The score was 2-2, and the fate of the game was hanging on the balance of one final penalty. Up stepped Antonin Panenka, a Czechoslovakian midfielder known for his thin stature… Yet audacious style.
The stadium fell silent as Panenka approached the ball. He took a few steps back, then began to run towards it. The goalkeeper, Sepp Maier, had been anticipating a powerful shot to one side or the other. But then, at the last moment, Panenka delicately chipped the ball straight down the middle of the goal, nestling it into the back of the net.
The crowd erupted into a frenzy of cheers and applause. They had just witnessed one of the most daring and memorable penalty kicks in the history of the game. Panenka had taken a huge risk, but it had paid off in the most spectacular way possible.
Years later, people still talk about that moment with awe and admiration. This was the start of the Panenka penalty kick, and only the most audacious players nowadays tempt fate with its use. Panenka’s daring move had secured Czechoslovakia’s victory in the European Championship final… and cemented his own place in footballing history with his genius.
It was in the Euro 1976 final, and he was taking the penalty which would decide the fate of the final. And Antonin took it in the coolest, most audacious way possible… By chipping the ball right down the middle of the goal.
