Diego Forlan’s stunning goal against Germany for third place in the 2010 World Cup was a moment of pure brilliance. The goal was a half-volley struck from 17 yards out, which bounced over and around German goalkeeper Hand-Jörg Butt… finding its way into the back of the net and giving Uruguay a crucial 2-1 lead in the 51st minute.
Forlan’s goal was his fifth of the tournament, putting him level with the likes of Thomas Müller, David Villa, and Wesley Sneijder as top scorers. The opportunity arose after some excellent build-up play down Uruguay’s right flank… with Forlan positioning himself at the edge of the penalty area towards the right side of goal.
To score the goal, Forlan had to bring his right foot high onto the ball to get on top of his shot. He did just that, driving the ball into the ground, causing it to bounce high and to the left of Butt… who could only watch in dismay as the ball sailed past him into the back of the net.
For Uruguay, the goal was a moment of pure ecstasy, giving them their first lead of the match and putting them in a strong position to secure the win. For Forlan, it was a crowning moment in a tournament where he had already established himself as one of the standout performers.
