The 2000 Champions League final was played between Real Madrid and Valencia. The match was being played at the Stade de France, in Paris, and was eagerly anticipated by football fans across the world. The final was an all-Spanish affair, and it was expected to be a closely fought match.
However, Real Madrid had other ideas, and they quickly took control of the game. In the 39th minute, Fernando Morientes put Real Madrid ahead with a fantastic header, and they never looked back. In the 67th minute, Steve McManaman doubled their lead with a legendary scissor volley goal. Valencia looked down and out.
But the icing on the cake came in the 75th minute, when Raul scored a goal that would go down in Champions League history. The ball was played out of a crowded Real Madrid penalty area toward the middle of the park, where Raul was waiting. He took the ball in his stride and ran nearly the whole field toward Valencia’s goal, all alone. He had time to think and stress, any mistake making him miss his moment.
And yet, as he arrived near Canizares’ goal, he decided to dribble the goalkeeper. He did so perfectly, but there was a Valencia player coming toward the goal as well and Raul was in a tight space. Raul shot the ball through the back of the defender with incredible accuracy, hitting the far-post and fooling him.
The Real Madrid fans erupted with joy, and Raul was mobbed by his teammates. It was a moment that would be etched in the memory of Real Madrid fans forever. The sheer brilliance of the goal was a testament to Raul’s skill and determination.
