In one of the most iconic El Clasico matches in history, Xavi Hernández made his mark in the 10th minute… putting Barcelona ahead against arch-rivals Real Madrid. After a Lionel Messi hit the woodwork just four minutes earlier, Xavi’s goal gave Barcelona the lead they needed to go on to thrash their opponents 5-0.
The move started with Andrés Iniesta making a run down the left flank, cutting inside at 22 yards. David Villa’s near post run drew both central defenders, leaving Xavi to run into the middle of the goal. A hard right-footed pass from Iniesta was headed right for Xavi near the spot when Marcelo slid in from his left back position… deflecting the ball up off his leg.
It then fell to Xavi, who showed incredible control to settle the ball and then chip it over the oncoming Iker Casillas. The deflection off Marcelo’s leg seemed to give Casillas enough time to come for the ball… Except it didn’t. At the last moment, Xavi flicked it over the goalkeeper and into the open net, giving Barcelona an early lead.
The goal was a testament to Xavi’s skill and precision, as well as his ability to seize the moment and take advantage of the slightest opportunities. It also showcased Barcelona’s attacking prowess and their ability to quickly turn defense into offense.
